Selecting the right staple length and adjusting the clinching mechanism depend directly on the type and total thickness of the corrugated cardboard.
Staple Length vs. Cardboard Thickness
18 mm (approx. 3/4") Staples
Best For: Heavy single-wall or standard double-wall corrugated boxes (BC-flute or EB-flute).
Total Cardboard Thickness: Ideal for combined cardboard flap thickness of 7 to 12 mm (approx. 1/4" to 1/2").
Role of the Tool's Depth Adjustment
The depth-of-drive adjustment on pneumatic carton staplers controls how far the staple leg penetrates before the internal anvil curves and clinches the staple legs.
Shallow Setting (Blind Clinching): Drives the staple so the leg curves entirely within the bottom layer of cardboard without piercing all the way through into the interior of the box. This protects contents inside from being scratched or snagged.
Deep Setting (Full Penetration Clinching): Drives the staple leg fully through all layers of cardboard, clinching tightly against the inner wall surface for maximum holding force on heavy shipments.
Rule of Thumb: Your staple leg length should equal the total combined thickness of the overlapping box flaps plus an extra 3 to 5 mm so the leg can bend into a secure "C" curve inside or under the bottom layer.
